What is organic tea?

Organic tea still comes from the Camilla Sinensis tea bush. White tea, green tea, black tea, oolong tea, etc., can all be organic. Whether or not a tea is organic depends on whether or not synthetic chemicals were spread on the tea leaves while they were growing.

These synthetic chemicals are harmful to the environment. Not only do they harm the soil where the tea (and any other food) is grown, but these chemicals destroy the surrounding ecosystem, and the health of the people who pick the tea leaves or farm the land.

Why go organic.

Instead of using toxic chemicals, such as herbicides and
pesticides, substances such as compost, natural organic matter, and plants are used. Not only do these natural means allow for the necessary ground cover, it allows for the needed nutrients for the tea tree to work their way into the soil.

If chemicals are sprayed on tea trees, what do you think you are absorbing when you drink your tea? Don't think that you are free from absorbing those chemicals, you would be very wrong and would be harming yourself without intending to. And that's not all, if nothing is done for the soil while it is being bombarded with chemicals, you just aren't getting the nutrients that you need from your tea.

Why go organic then? Well, if you don't do it for yourself, no one will. So do yourself a favor and switch over to organic tea. In the long run, you'll come out as the winner.

When growing tea via the organic way, weeds and insects are controlled through techniques like crop rotation, mulching, etc.

Growing organic tea is better for wildlife.

And how does growing organic tea affect the wildlife? And should
you care?

Yes, you definitely should care! Not only do synthetic herbicides and pesticides kill non-targeted animals, plants, and insects, but when mixed with other solvents, pesticides put out a massive toxic effect in the environment for a long time.

This affects birds, animals, and humans!

Organic is safer for humans.

On many tea farms, the tea trees are sprayed 15-20 times each year. The amount of times the plants are sprayed mainly depends on pest infestation for that particular year. Most chemicals that are used, such as: Aldrin 20E, Carbofuran 30, Endosulfan 35 EC, just to name a few, are listed as hazardous and toxic, and certain of them are banned in western countries.

Despite the danger that those toxic chemicals pose to humans, workers are often barefoot and in shorts when spraying these chemicals. Children and teenagers may sometimes be the one who spray the chemicals on the tea trees. This falls quite far from the recommended safety gear which includes masks, gloves, rubber boots, and polythene aprons.

Let's not forget that when it rains, the chemical on the tea trees are brought to the soil via the water. Which in turn, contaminates the soil and the water. This results in the chemicals infiltrating the tea trees for a long time.

Because organic tea requires more care overall, it costs more than other teas that are not organic. The price of organic tea should be considered in your budget (as it costs more).

If you can afford it, definitely go for it!
