What is a flowering tea?

A flowering tea? Yeah, I got it, it's a tea and it gives me a flavored brew to drink just like any other tea, but what is it, really?

These bundles of tea are produced in remote tea gardens in southwestern Yunnan Province, in China, near the borders of Laos and Vietnam. White, green, and black teas are picked in the early mornings. While they are still damp, the tea leaves are flattened and sewn with cotton thread into various shapes and bundles. Some shapes take about one minute to sew while other designs that are more elaborate can take up to 10 minutes. While they are still moist, the leaves are shaped into balls, mushrooms, cones, etc. Only after this sewing is done can the tea be dried.

This leaves you with a bundle that elegantly bloom into a work-of-art when they are steeped in hot water. In order to see this work-of-art bloom, make sure to use a glass teapot to watch the breathtaking shape the bundle takes as it unravels. There is a wide variety of flavors that range from sweet and subtle to rich and bold.

Not only is it fun to see what shape this bundle will develop in or what flower it will reveal (not all flowering teas contain flowers within them). It makes a wonderful gift for friends, families, and loved ones.

Note: All of the following flowering teas are from China and are low in caffeine.

This is considered to be both, a green and white tea, due to its light cup and delicate, slightly sweet flavor. This is a must try.

Volcano Flower Tea:
A rare handmade green tea that erupts with flowers when brewed. This is an extremely popular tea and regularly sells out between shipments.

How to brew flowering tea:

1. Place one flowering tea in a glass teapot.

2. Bring the water to a boil and pour over the tea bundle. Behold the magic of the unfolding tea leaves. Allow the flower to steep 2-3 minutes or to desired strength.

3. After enjoying the first pot, the flowering tea may be re-steeped 2-3 more times.

All of the tea should be poured into the teacups or pitcher after the appropriate time so that leaves do not remain in the hot water. That would ruin the fine taste of this tea.

Enjoy!
