What is earl grey tea?

Earl grey tea is a popular tea that is obtained by mixing black tea leaves with the oil of bergamot. The oil is extracted from the rind of the bergamot orange, a fragrant citrus fruit.

Originally, the term "Earl Grey" was applied only to black tea. But today, this term is also applied to green and white teas that contain the oil of the bergamot orange.

Earl grey tea was named after Charles Grey, the second earl in his line, who also was the Prime Minister to King William IV in the early 19th century.

It is said that Charles Grey received the recipe from a Chinese Mandarin whose son was rescued from drowning by one of the Lord Grey's men.

However, there is another version of this story that says that it was the son of an Indian Raja that had been rescued from a tiger by one of Grey's servants.

Whichever story is true, Charles Grey got his hands on the recipe to obtain this tea.

This tea became so popular in the 2nd Earl Grey's drawing room that his tea merchants were given a sample and were asked to come up with a close match to what Charles Grey had them taste in his drawing room. The Twinings company came up with the the first "Earl Grey's tea" and was the first to sell it in the British market.

And to show you how much this tea has advanced throughout time, today, you can even find a decaf version of this tea.

There is even a rooibos earl grey tea. Talk about change! And this rooibos earl grey tea doesn't contain caffeine.

And for amateurs, there is even a Darjeeling earl grey tea.
