What is bubble tea?
"Bubble tea" is a tea beverage that originated in Taiwan in the 1980s. The word "bubble" refers to the tapioca balls in the drink. These tapioca balls, or "pearls", are consumed with the beverage through a wide straw.
There are two types of this tea. The first one is the fruit-flavored teas, and the second is the milk teas. Milk teas may use dairy or non-dairy creamers.
This tea is especially popular in many Asian countries such as China, South Korea, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Thailand.
The proper name for this tea is Boba tea. This tea is a mixture of iced or hot sweetened tea, milk, and other flavorings. The distinctive characteristics of this tea are due to the black gummy balls made of tapioca which sit at the bottom of the cup.
The first of the first.
The original bubble tea consisted of a hot Chinese black tea, tapioca pearls, condensed milk, and honey. As this drink gained popularity, variations of flavors were created.
The first flavored brews had a hint of peach or plum. Then more fruity flavors began to appear such as: strawberry, passion fruit, chocolate, and coconut. These may be added in the form of powder, fruit juice, pulp, or syrup to hot black or green tea. It is then mixed with ice until it is chilled. That mixture is then combined with milk and cooked tapioca pearls.
But what are those pearls?
The pearls are made from the root and require an hour for preparation. After they are cooked, the pearls are drained and
poured into a
sugar-water solution and are then ready to be used. After having been cooked, they can last about 7 hours.
An alternative to the traditional tapioca balls are green pearls. Green pearls are green tapioca balls. They have a small hint of green tea flavor, and are usually more chewy than the traditional tapioca balls.
As time has moved on, new kinds of bubble drinks have come into being, such as, the 'Snow Bubble.' This 'Snow Bubble' drink is a slushie-like drink where you choose one of many fruit flavors. It is mixed in with shaved ice to make a smooth refreshing drink. After that the boba balls can be added from their assorted types, black boba which are the original, colored, rainbow boba, etc.
Tip:
- When ordering, there might be a chance that you will be asked whether you want 'pearls' or 'boba' in your drink. Both
terms refer to the tapioca balls.
History.
The origin of this brew came from Liu Han Chie, who worked in Chun Shui Tang teahouse, Taichung City, Taiwan. This was around the early 1980s. He experimented with cold milk tea by adding fruit, syrup, candied yams, and tapioca balls.
At first, the drink was not popular. But by the 1990s, this drink had become well-known in most parts of East and Southeast Asia.
In the late 1990s, bubble tea began to gain popularity in the major North American cities. This tea spread internationally
through Chinatowns and other overseas Asian communities.
It can now be found in major European cities such as London and Paris. This tea is also gaining in popularity in Canada, mainly in: Vancouver, British Columbia, Toronto, and Ontario. It is also gaining popularity in Australia: especially Sidney and Melbourne.
